Obituary

Pasquale “Pat” (J.) Serio, 90, of Medford passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 16, 2011. Born in Somerville, MA, he was the son of the late Salvatore and Victoria (DeMille) Serio. He was the husband of the late Anita (Azerowicz) Serio and the beloved brother of Rose Novello of Nahant and Mary Scenna of Medford. He was the brother of the late Salvatore Serio. He is survived by his sister-in-law Joung Sunn Serio and many loving nieces and nephews and their families.
A graduate of St. Joseph Catholic School and Somerville High School, he joined the U.S. Army during World War II and served for three and a half years in India and Burma. After serving our country, he married, moved to Medford and began working for the First National Food Company, where he was employed for 35 years. He later worked for the W.R. Grace Company in Woburn for 10 years
A communicant at the Immaculate Conception Church of Malden, Pat was a devout Roman Catholic and faithfully attended early morning Mass during Lent, even in his last year.
Pat’s passion was baseball. He was a proficient catcher in high school and knew the game inside and out. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, never missing a game on television and never missing the chance to discuss a game, a play, or any team with whomever would engage him.
Pat’s enjoyed thoroughbred horse racing; he had a steady group of friends at Suffolk Downs who remember that he always walked in smiling. He also read the Boston and local newspapers, cover to cover, and was conversant on many subjects, particularly politics. In his earlier years, he enjoyed vacationing at beach resorts and in Florida with his wife and family. After his wife passed away, he lived independently until his last days, kept a positive outlook and had a good rapport with family, neighbors, fellow parishioners. He shopped for himself, cooked, cared for his home, drove to and from Suffolk Downs several times per week, attended church: all to the admiration of his family and friends. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew him.
