Later, he earned an associate s degree in accounting from Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester. Mr. Berube served in the United States Marine Corps as a corporal in Operation Iraqi Freedom. After, he served in the Army National Guard from 2005 to 2009. He was a machinist at B &amp; V Grinding in Worcester for several years. His hobbies included playing horseshoes and shooting pool. He participated in poker tournaments at Mohegan Son and won several. He was a member of the PNA in Dudley. Mrs. Shead first worked at Thrifty s Market in Webster, she was then employed as a bookkeeper at American Optical Company in Southbridge where she met her husband, Bob. She later worked at Deary Bros, Chris Chevrolet and Nichols College, all of Dudley, before working at the Xtra Mart corporate offices in Quinebaug, CT and retiring from there at age 65. She was a member of Saint Joseph Basilica. She spent most of her spare time knitting, quilting, sewing. She took great pride in her work and loved giving completed projects away to all who knew her. She baked the best cookies and enjoyed all things Martha Stewart. All services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Cindy Smith,69, passed away on Friday, September 25, 2026, at Brigham and Women s Hospital in Boston, holding the hand of her beloved  twinny Susan. She had lived with cancer for an extraordinary 11½ years, but that was only one chapter of a life filled with creativity, generosity, courage, laughter, and love. She was born in Worcester on November 30, 1956, a daughter of the late Marie (Welch) and Frank Smith. She graduated from Bartlett High School in 1974 and, following her creative spirit, from Rittner s School of Floral Design in Boston in 1975. Cindy discovered her love of flowers while working at Eddie s Greenhouses during high school and for 5 years following design school. She went on to spend nearly 30 years at Dugan s Drug in Webster as a pharmacy technician and assistant manager. She was also a certified orthotic and mastectomy fitter When Dugan s closed, she took a courageous leap: at age 47, she opened Cindy s Flowers and Gift Shoppe in the very space the drugstore had occupied. It was the dream she had  kept in her back pocket, as she liked to say. Within three years, she was named Businessperson of the Year. Through her shop, Cindy brought beauty and comfort to people throughout Webster and the surrounding communities. She considered it an honor to be part of their happiest moments weddings, new babies, graduations, and birthdays and their saddest, when flowers could express what words could not. After selling her flower shop, Cindy joined BankHometown, first as a receptionist and later in Operations as a Deposit Services Specialist. She retired in 2022. Cindy was active in the Webster-Dudley-Oxford Chamber of Commerce, the Webster-Dudley Business Alliance, and the St. Louis League of Catholic Women. She coordinated Daffodil Days and Love Lights a Tree for the American Cancer Society, as well as food drives for the local Food Share program. A gifted artist, Cindy loved helping others discover their own creativity. She was certified to teach the Donna Dewberry One-Stroke Painting Technique. Nothing pleased her more than hearing someone insist,  I can t paint, and then watching them realize that perhaps they could. She was also an adventurous cook who generously shared recipes, tips, and shortcuts especially with the non-cooks among us. She always knew just the right dish for an occasion, including Sunday football snacks, though her interest was in the snacks rather than the game. She even had the confidence to serve a brand-new recipe to company, usually with delicious results. Cindy is survived by her twin sister, Susan Cyr and her husband Darryl Cyr; a brother-in-law, Stan Starkey; a sister-in-law, Virginia Lynch; her nieces and nephews, Michael, James and his wife Darcie, Leslie, Maria, Robin, and Annemarie; her cherished great-nieces and great-nephews, especially Josie and Waylon Starkey; cousins; and her former husband, Dan Nachajko. She was predeceased by her parents; by her beloved grandparents, affectionately known as  Neenie and Dada ; by her three older siblings, Brian F. Smith, PhD also known as Z. G. Standing Bear , Kevin J. Smith, and Dianne M. Starkey; and by her sister-in-law, Sally Smith. Cindy s illness demanded tremendous strength, but cancer did not define her. She will be remembered for the beauty she created, the talents she shared, the dream she dared to pursue, and the happiness, comfort, and inspiration she brought to so many. Her life, like the flowers she loved, was vibrant, colorful, and meant to be shared. Cindy specifically asked those attending her services to wear bright colors. He loved playing horseshoes and poker and would even kayak from Hyannis to Martha s Vineyard and back all in one day. Bob was a sports fan but favored the New England Patriots, Bruins, Celtics and Red Sox. As a youth, baseball was the sport he loved to play the most. More than anything, Bob was happiest with his family and friends and was proud of all of us, whatever our role. He had a gift of retaining a fondness always for all in his circles of people and pets too regardless of life s twists and turns. He was 75. Peter was passionate about a lot of things, and compassionate to a lot of people. He was full of energy and almost larger than life. If you got a gift from Peter, it was oversize and extra thoughtful. If you got a visit from him,  it was like a drive by, said his sister Trish. His motto was  Go, show, glow and blow. Then he was off to something either fun-loving or friend-helping.  He was pretty much up for anything, said his sister Mary.  Like the time he and Jared performed a water ballet in our swimming pool. He was  ungovernable, said his daughter-in-law Erin.  But he also had patience, and an amazing wealth of knowledge. Meanwhile, he would step out of holiday gatherings to check in on folks he knew who didn t have family to be with, Trish recalls. And he was strong in a way that helped him face obstacles and make a good life out of it, said his brother Michael. Peter s convictions were powerful and he was only partly kidding when he wore a T-shirt that said  I m not arguing with you, I m explaining why I m right. Peter was born in Miami, FL, on October 20, 1950, the son of Margaret M. (Ryan) and Henry P. Slota and soon grew up in Webster, MA. He graduated from Bartlett High School in Webster. In a preview of his lifelong love of music, Peter sang in the choir at the 1967 Montreal Expo. He served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1971 as an operating room tech, including one year in Vietnam  an experience that shaped his life dramatically and forever. At Fort Devens, MA, he met Linda, the love of his life, and they were married in 1971. Soon they had a son, born in 1973, and were living in St. Thomas, U.S.V.I, where Linda s family was residing at the time. Peter learned to fly single-engine airplanes in St. Thomas and later earned commercial and instrument ratings and taught flying. He also had his first operating room job following his military service, at Knud Hansen Memorial Hospital, where Dr. Heath passed along the  Go, Show &  motto that became Peter s, too. Peter s skills were put to the test when an American Airlines jet crashed in April 1976 at the St. Thomas airport, killing 37 and injuring more than 50. The young family returned to Webster later in 1976, had their second son in 1977, and have lived there ever since, with recent winters spent in Bonita Springs, FL, and, since their retirement, extensive travel. Peter recovered from alcohol dependency and became a beloved and dedicated advocate for hundreds of others, for decades. He was also very active in veterans affairs and was an early member of Vietnam Veterans Against the War. Peter served terms on the Webster Board of Selectmen and the Webster Housing Authority. He worked as an operating room tech at UMass Medical Center, was a pioneer in the application of the internet to dealership car sales and founded a solar power installation company (perhaps before its time!) Peter was an accomplished golfer, holding a single-digit handicap over many years and competing in Massachusetts State Amateur events. He drove a solar-powered golf cart. Peter loved playing music and wrote several songs, including one called  All My Brothers, and taught in the Guitars 4 Vets program. He sang and played in a few public settings, including nursing homes. And, in some of the happiest times of his life, Peter was a doting grandfather to Henry. Peter is survived by his wife of 55 years, Linda M. (Pavlick) Slota; his sons Jason, of Webster, and Jared, his wife Erin and their son Henry of Killingly, CT; his brother Michael, wife JoAnn and children Stephen and Shannon of Danielson, CT; his sister Trish, husband Don Stuart and their son James Hollingsworth of Webster; his sister Mary and husband Ernie Piper of Franklin, MA. In 1982 he moved to the United States, living in Dallas, TX, Worcester and Dudley. He has lived here since 2003. Mr. Melewski worked as a machinist in a research laboratory in Wroclaw, Poland and then as a machine operator at Wachusett Wire Company in Worcester before retiring in 1993. He was a communicant of Saint Joseph Basilica. He enjoyed fishing. He was a calm and steady soul in our lives, someone who brought comfort simply by being there. His love, kindness, and quiet presence meant more to his family than words can express. He will truly be missed and will remain in the hearts of all who loved him. His Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph s Church (please meet at church) on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m., followed by a private burial.
