Jack was a devoted husband, loving family man, and talented artist whose passion for music brought joy to those around him. March 5, 1935  October 20, 2026 Walter Gregory Vartanian, Esq., of Belmont, Massachusetts, passed away on October 20, 2026, at the age of 91. A respected immigration attorney, devoted family man, and proud Armenian-American, Walter will be remembered for his intellect, generosity, humor, and enduring curiosity about the world. Born in Brighton and raised in Cambridge, Walter was the son of Armenian immigrants whose experiences helped shape his appreciation for education, perseverance, and opportunity. He graduated from Boston University and earned his law degree from Boston University School of Law in 1959, where he served on the Law Review. Among the early immigration attorneys practicing in Boston, Walter devoted more than 55 years to representing individuals, families, and businesses navigating the American immigration system. As the son of immigrants, he brought both professional expertise and a personal understanding of the challenges faced by those seeking to establish their lives in the United States. His work on the 1990 landmark case Matter of Delitizer changed how employment-based immigrant petitions are adjudicated and led to the nickname "Delitizer" by his peers. In 1960, Walter established the Law Firm of Walter G. Vartanian. Forty years later it became Vartanian &amp; Vartanian with the addition of his son Gregory, with whom he practiced alongside for another 20 years. He served as president of the New England Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and the Cambridge-Arlington-Belmont Bar Association. He was a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association and admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States. Deeply connected to his Armenian heritage, Walter was active in numerous community organizations. He served as vice president and secretary of the Parish Council of Holy Trinity Armenian Church of Greater Boston, as a board member of the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research, and as chairman of the Council of Armenian Executives. He was also a member of the Knights of Vartan and the Masons. Beyond his professional life, Walter possessed a keen intellect, an extraordinary memory, and a lifelong interest in history, politics, sports, and world affairs. He enjoyed lively conversation, spirited debate, and sharing stories, often accompanied by his quick wit and distinctive sense of humor. His generosity and willingness to help others were equally characteristic of the man he was. In 1962, Walter married his beloved wife, Anne Rose Ghougasian, of New York, at Holy Trinity Armenian Church in Cambridge. Together they raised three children and shared a life rich in family, friendship, travel, and Armenian traditions. Above all, Walter cherished his family. He took great pride in his children and grandchildren, valuing the time they spent together and the traditions passed from one generation to the next. Although he experienced the profound losses of his wife Anne and daughter Regina, his devotion to family remained a constant throughout his life. In his later years, Walter recorded memories of his childhood, family history, career, and travels. Reflecting on his life, he expressed gratitude for his parents, sister, wife, children, grandchildren, and friends. He summarized his remarkable journey with characteristic simplicity: "Quite a trip." Walter was the beloved husband of the late Anne Rose (Ghougasian) Vartanian; devoted father of Gregory Vartanian and his wife Sonia, Carol Khalarian and her husband Alex, and the late Regina Najarian and her husband Berj; loving grandfather of Sebu, Avi, Nora, Armen, Eva, and Natalie; and brother of the late Araxie Vartanian. He is also survived by many loving relatives and friends in Boston, New York, and beyond. Mary graduated from the New England School of Art and Design. She pursued an advertising career in Boston, holding various positions. While living in Avon, Mary devoted her free time to community activities and serving as a docent for 25 years at the Fuller Craft Museum. Mary loved watercolor painting, line and ballroom dancing, and gardening. In her Watertown community, she enjoyed art activities, bingo, and outings with her niece, including shopping, day trips to Boston, Newport and Nantasket Beach. They moved back to Needham, MA in 1956, to be close to family. Dot went on to work at General Binding Corporation and Cullinet Software Corporation. She volunteered at schools, even starting Armenian classes at the local elementary school, volunteered for Meals on Wheels and was an active member of a number of Armenian organizations. Dot reigned supreme over her favorite pastimes, from her talent for making hand-knit dishcloths, her skill with 1000-piece jigsaw puzzles, card games, Bingo and her unbeatable luck with scratch tickets, to her endless love for Boston sports, especially her beloved Celtics. She will be remembered for her warm hospitality, her baking, cooking, and friendships. Born in Watertown, Massachusetts, on March 27, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Louis Elias and Helen (Geremanis) Tsickritzis. She married Richard Jeffrey Gosdanian, also of Watertown, and they shared 61 years of marriage. Together they raised their sons, Aram and Peter, in Belmont and Falmouth before later living in Waltham. Virginia was loving, curious, generous, and full of vim and vigor. She spent years working and finding great friendships at MIT Laboratories, Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN), and Cisco Systems. She devoted decades to the Women s Guild at St. James Armenian Apostolic Church in Watertown. Her Greek heritage was central to her life. She cherished her family's roots on the island of Lesvos and held dear her many trips to Greece. She made sure her children and grandchildren knew where they came from and carried that heritage forward. She loved music, dancing, art, travel, bowling, cards, and family gatherings. She was often the first and last on the dance floor, a fierce competitor at the bowling alley and card table, and, according to family lore, perhaps the only person who could consistently beat the casinos. In addition to her husband, Jeff, she is survived by her sister, Marsha (Tsickritzis) Leonard and her husband Robert, her brother Peter Tsickritzis and his wife, Ellen; her sons, Aram and his wife Julie (Christianer) of Galena, Ohio, and Peter and his wife Amy (Costello) of Reading, Massachusetts; her six grandchildren, Evan, Abbey, Thanos, Leo, Lila, and Nathaniel, and many cousins, nieces and nephews, all of whom she adored. Virginia s journey with memory loss was long and gradually altered the woman her family knew, but it never changed the person they remembered: a fiercely loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend with an unmistakable spirit. She was the cherished sister of Lucy Sisoian and aunt of Paul Sisoian. Peggy is also survived by many loving cousins and extended family members. Peggy grew up in North Providence, Rhode Island, and attended Rhode Island College. She later attended Harvard University, where she earned her master s degree in education with a focus on guidance. She dedicated her professional life to education, working as a schoolteacher and guidance counselor in Rhode Island, Indiana, and Massachusetts. Her 15 years with the Waltham Public Schools were an especially meaningful part of her career. Peggy deeply valued the people she worked alongside and the friendships and lasting relationships she formed with her colleagues over the years. For 60 years, she made Waltham her home and became a treasured part of the community. Throughout her life, Peggy remained deeply connected to her Armenian heritage and community. She was a lifelong member of the Armenian Youth Federation (AYF) and the Armenian Relief Society (ARS), organizations that held a special place in her life and reflected her enduring commitment to her Armenian heritage and community. It was through her involvement in the AYF that Peggy met Leo, beginning a life together centered on family, Armenian heritage, and community. Peggy s greatest joy was her family. She treasured time spent together, especially sharing dinners and conversation around the table. Her generous and welcoming nature made family and friends always feel at home in her company. When enjoying quieter moments, Peggy could often be found with a good book. She will be remembered most for the warmth she shared, her generosity toward others, and the love and devotion she gave to her family.
