Mr. Carroll Lee Perkins of Pilot Mountain, N.C., passed away on Monday, June 6, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center after a short illness. Mr. Perkins was born on October 13, 1921 to the late Lee Perkins and Hettie Snow Perkins. He was a graduate of Copeland High School at age 15 while serving as class president as well as student body president. Mr. Perkins was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corp and served as an armament trainer for B-24 aircraft crews. In civilian life, he was a McLean truck driver, beef, dairy and tobacco farmer before enrolling at Wake Forest University at age 36. After graduation from Wake Forest University in 1965, he served 22 years as a teacher and later the Audio-Visual Coordinator for the Surry County School System until retirement in 1987. He also completed his Master of Education at Appalachian State University. Mr. Perkins resided in the Copeland and Pilot Mountain communities while raising three sons and a daughter. He was very active in the Methodist Church, The Grange and the Ruritan Club. Mr. Perkins also spent six consecutive years as a missionary in Central America working as a carpenter. He loved religious quartet music and sang in the church choir for many years. He was instrumental in introducing audio-visual applications through all 100 counties of the North Carolina public school systems. Mr. Perkins is survived by the love of his life, Beulah M. Perkins. They were married for 63 years. She has been his fellow educator, traveling companion, expert gardener and number one fan. He is also survived by four children, Carroll G. Perkins of Oviedo, Florida, Brent L. Perkins of Sunset Beach, N.C., Susan E. Perkins of Burlington, N.C. and Mark A. Perkins of Winston-Salem, N.C.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two brothers, Jimmy “Jim” Perkins (Betty) and Robert “Bob” Perkins (Shirley). He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Thurmond Perkins and Walter Perkins and a sister, Vetra Covington. The family will receive visitors at the Cox-Needham Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 8th, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 9th, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Whitakers Chapel United Methodist Church, Pilot Mountain, NC with the Reverend Joseph Fulk III presiding over the service. Interment will be held at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Carroll L. Perkins and Beulah M.
