LUCAS - Rose Lucas, 80, passed away Friday, May 6, 2011 at Community Hospice Morris Center in Jacksonville. She was born December 26, 1930 in Fort Myers, FL and moved to Fernandina Beach in 1953. Most recently Mrs. Lucas had been living in Jacksonville, FL.
Mrs. Lucas attended many Baptist churches in the Fernandina Beach – Yulee area over the years. Her most recent church membership was at Hedges Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and was a Girl Scout leader. She was formerly a member of Awana and American Legion Post 54 in Fernandina Beach. Mrs. Lucas was an expert seamstress who had worked for nearly everyone. She enjoyed working with the handicapped and was a volunteer at the Amelia Island Care Center. She also loved having children around her.
Mrs. Lucas was predeceased by her husband, George A. Lucas who passed away in 1997.
She is survived by a sister in law, Rosemary Sherd; her son and daughter in law, Joe E. and Hazel Smith of Yulee, FL; two grandchildren, Erin Smith Spann and Heather Smith; three step grandchildren, A. J. Lavigne, Michelle Osborn and Marie Wolfert; 14 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thurday, May 12, in the Stephens Chapel at Green Pine Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Patterson officiating.
