Obituary

Mrs. Vivian Cordella Barker Manuel, age 85, of Pilot Mountain, NC, passed away on Monday, March 21, 2011 at her residence. She was born on February 16, 1926 in Surry County to the late William McKinley and Sallie Francis Hooker Barker. Mrs. Manuel was retired from Renfro Hosiery after twenty-five years, retired from American Red Cross Volunteer, a lifetime volunteer of Northern Hospital of Surry County, retired from Pilot Knob Volunteer Fire Department Auxillary; and a member of Brims Grove Baptist Church. Mrs. Manuel is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Judy and Hickmon Simmons, and Pam Manuel, both of Pilot Mtn.; three sons and daughter-in-laws, Jerry and Susan Manuel, Thomas and Glenda Manuel, and Dennis and JoAnn Manuel, a foster son, Ronald Inman, of Pinnacle, ten grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Vernie Cox, of Tobaccoville; one brother, Elwood Barker, of Lithia Beach, FL. A special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, L.H. and Peggy Manuel, of Pilot Mtn., three sisters-in-law, Faye Mitchell, of Greensboro, Lucy Medlock, of Winston Salem, and Judy Barker, of North Wilkesboro, NC. Mrs. Manuel was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Manuel, her parents, and three brothers, Raymond, William, and Leon Barker. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at Brims Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Gerald Jones and Todd Byrd officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 from 6-8 PM at Cox-Needham Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pilot Mountain Rescue Squad, PO Box 743 Pilot Mountain, NC 27041, or Mountain Valley Hospice, 401 Technology Lane Suite 200 Mt. Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Vivian’s special friends who she volunteered with at Northern Hospital of Surry County for over seventeen years. Special thanks goes to Tina and Melissa and all the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home.
