Elayne M. D'Errico

My mother may have been far-from-perfect. But aren't we all?

What she is, however, could never be summed up in words. (However, I'll try -- just a little.)

She was a fighter. She tried so hard to be the best she could be, and I think when she fell short it made her sad, and frustrated. Things sometimes weren't that easy in her life -- there were roadblocks and trials. But you know, she always kept trying. She never gave up. And as much as she tried to correct her missteps, she forgave and forgot others' mistakes as well.

She was a fantastic cook. She could figure out how to make anything, and she loved to share her food with everyone -- her family, her friends, her co-workers.

She became a mother and a wife at a young age. She traveled the world but was always happy to land home. She was humble and appreciative, concerned and empathetic.

She had a great sense of humor. She loved to listen and loved to laugh.

She loved too much. She put all of herself into everything she did. She had several careers: a housewife; a teacher; a store manager. Sometimes she was really good at them, and, sometimes, not so much.

She was great at some things, too. As a mother, a sister, a daughter, a friend. As Grammy. She loved her entire family more than they'll ever realize. I know she loved me and her "new daughter" (my wife), and absolutely adored her grandson.

I can hear her, after her memorial, being humble, saying it was all too much. But at the same time, thanking everyone for for coming. She would have straightened my tie and said I looked handsome and given me a little hug. ...

Now she's gone, but left behind enough love to last a lifetime.
