Obituary

Charles L. Carey a lifelong resident of Lawrence, Massachusetts died Wednesday, December 29th, 2010 surrounded by family and friends.

Born in Lawrence on July 5th, 1918 to the late William R. Sr., and Elsie V. (Henabry) Carey, Chuck attended St. Patrick Grammar School and graduated from Lawrence High School where he captained the Lawrence High baseball team before graduating in 1935.

Chuck played baseball throughout his college years for Duke University in North Carolina and graduated in 1939 with a Bachelor's degree in English. He later received a Master's degree in Education.

After college, Chuck played semi-professional baseball, along with his brother Bill, Jr. for the Yankee Farm System before WWII.

During WWII Chuck served 2 1/2 years overseas in Luson and the Solomon Islands with the U.S. Army as a Fire Director with the 135th Field Artillery 37th Division.

Chuck was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign Ribbon with two Bronze Battle Stars, and the World War II Victory Ribbon. Upon return to the US, Chuck worked for the Immigration and Naturalization Service until his retirement.

He remained an avid baseball enthusiast and enjoyed reading, writing poetry, and coin and stamp collecting.

As well as several great nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother Bill Carey, Jr., his sisters Elaine (Carey) Leary and Marilyn (Carey) Bateman, and his loving nephew Gerald Leary.

His funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 5th, 2011 at 11:00 AM in Saint Patrick Church in Lawrence, MA.

Burial will follow in the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in North Andover, MA.
