Obituary

The first baby girl born at Truesdale Hospital dies


Dorothy A. (Dodge) Simmons of Little Compton, RI passed away April 10, 2010 at the Highlander Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Fall River, MA after a brief illness. She was 99. Dorothy was the widow of the late Allen P. Simmons and Harold B. Walker.

She was born in Fall River, MA, the daughter of the late George R. and Lillis (Thurber) Dodge and sister of the late Jeannette D. Gardner. She graduated from BMC Durfee High School and Simmons College in 1932. Mrs. Simmons also graduated from the Thibodeau Business School and remained there as a teacher. She moved to Little Compton in 1942 and worked in the Little Compton Town Library. Mrs. Simmons was a member of the United Congregational Church in Little Compton where she was a faithful choir member and Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of the Ladies Aide, the Social Rebekah Lodge # 11, the Grange, the Sogkonate Garden Club and the Westport Art Club. Although an avid gardener and an accomplished artist, her greatest joy was gracing us with her piano talent. She could play by ear, as well as read sheet music.

Survivors include a daughter Susan (Walker) Peckham and her husband Norman of Little Compton, three grandchildren David Peckham, Sandy Croteau and Linda Peckham-Costa and six great grandchildren Christopher, Ben, Korrie, Shannon, Kayla, Kelly, Keane and Christian.


Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, April 17 at 11am in the United Congregational Church at the Commons, Little Compton.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Little Compton Ambulance Fund or the United Congregational Church.

Interment will be private.
