Martin Hitchcock
2/5/2010

Martin Allan Hitchcock of Winchester, MA died on Feb. 5th at home after a courageous 3 ½ year battle with brain cancer (glioblastoma multiforme). Born on November 11, 1933 to Floyd M. Hitchcock and Bessie M. Paro of Trumbull Connecticut, he received a BA from Yale in 1955, and an MBA from Wharton Graduate School, University of Pennsylvania in 1958. He married Patricia L. Page while studying Russian at the Army Language School in Monterey CA in 1959.

A love of music accompanied Marty throughout his life. He learned how to play the piano and taught himself to play the organ at a young age. His musical background included serving as a church organist while a student at Yale. Later he directed the Army Base Choir at Bad Aibling, Germany and still later he was choir director and organist at the Church of the Epiphany, Mt. Airy, PA. Upon moving to Winchester he joined the choir at the Parish of Epiphany. Marty was not only an avid fan of classical music and early standards but was also a performer and an advocate of making music and music education available to all in Winchester. He performed in the Parish of the Epiphany’s Cloister Garden Series, was past chair of the Winchester Music Society (organizing open sight-readings), the Winchester Concert series and the local Mass. Arts Lottery council. He also helped found the Winchester Community Music School where he was a trustee and then advisor for years. He has been an inspiration and mentor to many aspiring and successful musicians in and outside of his family.

Marty moved with his family to Winchester in 1970 to join the family business, Louis E. Page Inc. (a company specializing in wholesale wire mesh products). He became president of the business in the ‘80s but his brain tumor forced him to retire in 2006. A great believer in the importance of volunteering, he served as a Winchester Town Meeting member in the 80’s, recruited and interviewed students for Yale, acted with Pat as host parents for an ABC student, and was politically active canvassing for human rights issues. He was also an active member of the Parish of the Epiphany, serving on the vestry, chairing various committees, singing in the choir and filling in as church organist occasionally if necessary. He swam every morning at the Y before going to work and enjoyed carpentry and spending time with his family at Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Even though he was slowed down by his brain tumor, he sang in the church choir until the end.

Marty is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years Pat, loving daughters Elizabeth Louise Hitchcock (husband David Hogenson) of Boulder, CO, Ann Fulton Hitchcock (husband Frank Huedepohl) of Telgte, Germany and Margaret Page Hitchcock of San Francisco, CA. He leaves four grandchildren: Nicholas and Charlotte Hogenson and Benjamin and Thomas Hitchcock.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sat., Feb. 13 at the Parish of the Epiphany, 70 Church St., Winchester, MA 01890 at 11 am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. In lieu of flowers, donations in Martin’s memory may be made to the Parish of the Epiphany Music Memorial Fund at the address listed, or to the Winchester Community Music School, 407 Highland Ave., Winchester.
