William J. "Sonny" Lopes, Sr., 79, of New Bedford died October 13, 2009 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.
He was the husband of the late Emilia L. "Millie" (Morris) Lopes.
Born in Wareham, the son of the late Christian and Anna (Teixiera) Lopes, he lived in New Bedford most of his life.
Mr. Lopes was the proprietor of W.J. Lopes and Sons Construction for many years.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Survivors include 3 sons, David Lopes and his wife Darcel of Boston, Richard Lopes of Providence and William Lopes, Jr. and his wife Billie of Maryland; 2 sisters, Charlotte Baptista of Onset and Anne Gomes of New Bedford; 8 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews including Anthony Britto, Jr; his companion, Margaret Gomes of New Bedford.
He was the brother of the late Tony Lopes.
