Robert L. Smith Sr., 87, of Cindy Lane, Mystic, passed away July 22,
2009. He was predeceased by wife, Doris *Sally* Caulkins Smith.
He was born December 8, 1921 in Groton, Connecticut, son of Charles
Smith Sr. and Ethel Osborne Smith.
Mr. Smith worked for many years as a chipper/grinder for General
Dynamics. He retired and then worked his passion -- GARDENING. Ask
the many people who were recipients of his tomato and hot pepper bags.
In the winter, he would give very healthy (right) sweets. He's now
working in a more heavenly garden. Bob (as well as his brother,
George, had another major passion -- cheese curls.
He is survived by his three children, Cynthia Smith Botchis of Mystic,
Robert Smith Jr. of New London, and Sandra Smith Houle of Gales Ferry,
and predeceased by a step-son, Richard Buckley. He has five
grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Bob was one of 15 children. He is also survived by two sisters and
one brother, Nathan Smith of New London, Bessie Stafford of Mystic,
and Charlotte Whipple of Pawcatuck.
He is predeceased by Ethel Smith, Charles Smith, George Smith,
Frederick *Fritz* Smith, Maude Whipple, Dorothy DeMoura; Francis
Smith, Albert Smith, and Barbara Smith.
His family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Friday from 11am-12:45pm, followed by a Graveside Service at 1pm with military honors at Elm Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Mark Porizky will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice.
