Obituary

Francisco "Frank" Monteiro, 87, of Dartmouth, formerly of New Bedford, died Monday April 6, 2009 at St. Luke's Hospital surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Mary G. "BiBi" (Gonzales) Monteiro.

Born in Brava, Cape Verde, the son of the late Honorio and Olympia (Almeida) Monteiro, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life before moving to Dartmouth in 2005.

He was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church.

Mr. Monteiro was formerly employed as a chief cook for Moran Tugboat Company in New York until his retirement.

He was a member of the National Maritime Union. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and cooking for his family. He was an avid New England Patriots fan.

Survivors include his wife; five sons, John Monteiro of East Wareham, Oliveiro Monteiro, and his wife Carminda of Florida, Honorio Fernandes of Brockton, Olavo Mingola and his wife Rona of Dartmouth, and Daniel Mingola and his wife Terry, of Acushnet; five daughters, Tillie Fredette, Frances Fernandes and her husband Ady, Nancy Monteiro and her companion Peter DiPrato, all of New Bedford, Rose DosSantos of Florida, and Denora Mello and her husband Jim of Dartmouth; a sister, Benvinda Resendes, and her husband Arthur of New Bedford; 19 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was the grandfather of the late Alex Mingola, and the brother of the late Regina Lopes, Oliveiro, Alfred, and Antonio Monteiro.

The Liturgy of the Word and Final Comendation will be held at St. Lawrence Church on Saturday April 11th at 9 AM. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours Friday 4-8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. A pro-burial Mass will be held on Saturday April 18th at 11 AM at St. Lawrence Church.
