Phyllis E. (Smith) Deming of Chestnut Hill formerly of Hopkinton and Needham died on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at Newton Wellesley Hospital. She was 78 years old. Born in Boston, she was raised in Needham and was a graduate of Needham High School Class of 1949 and continued her education at Children’s Hospital Nursing School. Mrs. Deming was a nurse at Children’s Hospital and later in local Nursing Homes and for the VNA. Mrs. Deming lived in Needham for over 57 years before moving to Hopkinton. She worked as a Crossing Guard for the Town of Needham from 1975 to 1980. Phyllis was a member of the Boston Navigators Club where she was a navigator and taught in the Pequosette Power Squadron District. She was a Life Master Bridge Player and member of the American Contract Bridge League. She also enjoyed painting. The beloved wife of the late Richard B. Deming, she was the loving mother of Ronald S. Japinga of Aptos, CA, Ruth A. Japinga of Grandin, Fl and the late Robin Scott Japinga. Phyllis was the sister of Barbara Fouquet of Florida and the late Charles Smith. Grandmother of 13 grandchildren and I great grandchild. A Funeral Service will be held at the Carter Memorial United Methodist Church, 800 Highland Ave Needham on Monday January 12 at 11:00 AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held in the church from 10:00 to 10:45 prior to the service. Interment is private.
