Obituary

Sheldon C. Bernstein of Winthrop passed away on December 25, 2008 surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of the late Barbara (Rubin).

Sheldon was born on November 11, 1931 in Chelsea, MA and spent most of his life in Winthrop. He was educated in the Winthrop Schools and was a tremendous athlete, excelling in basketball, football and baseball. He graduated from Winthrop High School in 1951. In 1999, he was inducted into the Winthrop High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Sheldon was the former owner of Bernstein Electric Supply Company in Chelsea. He was a member of the Winthrop Golf Club for fifty years where he served in the past on the Board of Governors, ran the Scholarship Fund for many years and was the President of the Mosquito League. He was Past Master of Ocean Lodge of Masons Winthrop and was also a life member of the Winthrop Lodge of Elks. Sheldon was an avid Patriots fan, a 30 year season ticket holder, and attended the last 23 consecutive Super Bowls.

Sheldon was the devoted father of Joel E. Bernstein and his wife Lisa, Gary A. Bernstein and his wife Claire, Lisa B. Lifer and her husband Craig, Terri B. Goodman and her husband Mark, and Karen M. Bernstein. He was the dear brother of Theodore Bernstein, and George L. Bernstein and his wife Elaine. He was the dear friend of Dory Howell. Sheldon was the loving grandfather of Barbara and her husband Vasken Hauri, Carl, Kevin, Brian, and Daniel Bernstein; and Brett, Sara, Jennifer and Matthew Goodman. Sheldon was also survived by his devoted dog “Meg”.

Services at the Torf Funeral Chapel, 151 Washington Ave., (Cary Sq.) Chelsea on Sunday, December 28 at 11:00 AM. Interment in Sharon. Memorial observance at his late residence on Sunday only following the interment from 2:00-8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Sheldon’s memory may be made to the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation, 1 Patriot Place, Foxboro, MA 02035.
