NEW BEDFORD — Ruth Delano Whitin, formerly of Moreland Terrace in New Bedford, died Monday June 30, 2008, at N.B. Jewish Convalescent Home after a period of declining health.
Daughter of the late Arthur D. and Florence (Smith) Delano, she was born in New Bedford and was a life long area resident.
She attended Smith College and was a member of Grace Episcopal Church. Over the years, Ruth was active with the Ladies Branch of the N.B. Port Society, the N.B. Day Nursery, the visiting board of St. Luke's Hospital and Auxiliary, the Lumbard Volunteers, the Old Dartmouth Historical Society, the Zeiterion and the Waterfront Area Historic League.
The sister of the late Stephen Delano of Westport, she is survived by her daughters, Sarah Whitin Brownell of Dartmouth and Betsey Whitin Tyler of Pasadena, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Because of her longtime commitment and interest in New Bedford and its history, it is suggested remembrances be made in her name to the Zeiterion, WHALE or Grace Episcopal Church.
Private arrangements are with the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., New Bedford.
