Norman E. Goodrow, 89, a longtime resident of Derry, NH, died Thursday, May 29, 2008 in the Parkland Medical Center, Derry following a period of declining health. Mr. Goodrow was born in Haverhill, MA on March 1, 1919, a son of the late John F. and Irene G. (Welch) Goodrow. He grew up working in different logging camps in Maine and New Hampshire. In 1938 he married Beatrice Blanchard in Haverhill, MA. Mr. Goodrow served in the Philippines with the U.S. Navy during WWII. Following his return from the war, he went to work for General Motors for over 60 years, eventually becoming General Manager of what is now Betley Chevrolet in Derry. He was a member of the Halcyon Club in Derry, where he worked and also managed for 20 years, and was a life member of VFW Post #1617 Derry. During his younger years he enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing and was an excellent baseball player.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Beatrice M. Goodrow of Derry, five children, Norma Hansen of Derry, Robert Goodrow of Wilburton, OK, twin sons, Don Goodrow of New Boston, NH and Ron Goodrow of Derry and Carol Charamut of Canton, CT, nine grandchildren, 12 great- grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren, two brothers, Guy Goodrow of Maryland and David Goodrow of Manchester, NH, a sister, Doris Jaskot of Windham, NH and also by nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Houle and two brothers, John Goodrow and George Welch.
Visiting hours were held 2-4 and 6-8pm Sunday, June 1, 2008 in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry. Graveside services were held on Monday, June 2nd at 10:00am in the Forest Hill Cemetery, E. Derry at the Goodrow lot on Sawyer Ave. in the cemetery.
