Obituary

Mary T. (Campbell) Hopkins, 87 years, of Brockton died March 20, 2008, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Allen J. Hopkins, Sr. Mary, a lifelong resident of Brockton, was the daughter of the late Frederick and Mary E. (Cantwell) Campbell. She was a 1938 graduate of Brockton High School and received her LPN degree from Southeastern Regional Technical School in 1973 at the age of 52. She had been employed as a nurse at New England Sinai Hospital, Brockton VA Medical Center, Lutheran/Guardian Center and retired from St. Joseph Manor in 1985. Upon her retirement from St. Joseph Manor her peers referred to her as “a great humanitarian who was loved by all her patients and was greatly admired and respected by her colleagues”. Following her retirement from nursing, she founded the first free Alzheimer’s Day Care Center at the Dorn Davis Senior Center at the Howard School; was a volunteer for the Leaps in Literacy program at the Raymond School; ran a Day Care Center for children from her home; was a volunteer reader in the Pediatric Unit at Brockton hospital; taught CCD at St. Nicholas and St. Edward Churches and was a sponsor family for the Fresh Air Fund for children from New York and Canadian Border Native American children. She was a member of the Brockton Council on Aging and a communicant of St. Edith Stein Parish.

She is survived by a daughter Joanne F. Roman of Brockton, a son Allen J. Hopkins, Jr. of Rockland, three granddaughters Mary E. (Eldridge) Ellis and her husband Ben of Bridgewater, Kathleen Septelka and her husband Lucas of Mansfield and Kimberly DeMelo and her husband Al of Dartmouth; her great grandchildren Kenneth Furlong of Brockton, Marlena and Lucas Jr. Septelka of Mansfield and Samantha Vaughan of Dartmouth; one sister Ednamae Campbell of Brockton and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Frederick “Gunner” and James E. Campbell.

Funeral Service in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street ( Rte 123) Brockton Monday at 11am. Visitation prior to the service 9-11am. Burial at a later date in Calvary Cemetery.
