GLOUCESTER: Wilfred S. Prince, 81, of McPherson Park, died Thursday, February 8, 2008 in the Den Mar Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Rockport. He was the husband of Janice R. (Lee) Prince.
Born in Boston on May 8, 1926 he was the son of the late Wilmont W. and Florence L. (Black) Prince. A lifelong resident of Gloucester, he was a graduate of Gloucester High School and the Newman Preparatory School. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served as a member of the 165th Infantry Regiment in Japan before being honorably discharged on November 21, 1945.
Mr. Prince was the owner and operator of the Prince Insurance Agency in Gloucester for thirty-two years before retiring in 1989. He was instrumental in the establishing of the Gloucester Babe Ruth Baseball League, where he also coached for several years. He had also refereed high school basketball games and was a former member of the Bass Rocks Golf Club.
In addition to his wife of fifty-seven years, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Natalie F. and Robert Sweet, a son, Jay W. Prince, four granddaughters, Nicole and Hailey Sweet and Victoria and Vanessa Prince, a sister-in-law, Marilyn and her husband, William Burns all of Gloucester and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be privately held at the convenience of the family. There are no visiting hours. Expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the charity of one’s choice.
