Augustus Frederick Craig, 79, of Stonington, Connecticut, died on October 18th, 2007. He died peacefully while surrounded by his loving family. Born in Mystic CT on August 26th, 1928, he was the son of the late William Payne Craig and Ida Belle Holly.
Gus was the beloved husband of Virginia (Twiggy) Craig for 51 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four children, Gus Craig of Stonington, CT; Laura Zeppieri of Ledyard, CT; Diane Kodama of North Stonington, CT; and Bill Craig of Phoenix, AZ, and his twelve grandchildren. Gus is also survived by a sister, Anne Warren, of Mystic, CT and many nieces and nephews. Gus is predeceased by his siblings William Craig, Jean Killen and Barbara Ferguson.
After serving in the United States Navy as a submariner, he went to work for Davis Standard from October 1955 until his retirement in April of 1992. Gus put his gifted hands to work in the extruder assembly department for 37 years in order to provide for his family. In addition to Davis Standard, he spent 11 wonderful summers with his family, hosting campers and beachgoers on Ram Island (Mystic Island). He was often seen driving as many as a dozen children along the beach on the old jeep while singing "Henry he VIII."
His family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Monday from 6-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, Stonington Borough on Tuesday at 9:30am. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery.
