Obituary

Calvin Burnett, 86, of Medway, died, Monday, October 8, 2007 at the Medway Country Manor Nursing Home. He was the husband of Torrey (Milligan) Burnett, whom he married in 1960.

Born in Cambridge on July 18, 1921, he was the son of the late Nathaniel and Adelaide (Waller) Burnett. He was a resident of Medway since 1977 and formerly resided in Newton.

Mr. Burnett received a Bachelor’s Degree from the Massachusetts College of Art and a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from Boston University. He was a professor at the Massachusetts College of Art for 33 years until his retirement in 1985.

A well-known Boston artist, Mr. Burnett specialized in printmaking, illustration and painting. His work is in collections at the Smithsonian, Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of African-American History and Boston Public Library, as well as in many private collections.

Mr. Burnett was the author of Objective Drawing Techniques, a book used in many colleges. He was also the founder of the Association of African-American Artists and was listed in both Who’s Who in American Art and Who’s Who in Education.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Tobey Burnett of Medway.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial service on Friday, October 12 at 10 a.m. at the Community Church of West Medway, 193 Main Street in Medway.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of the Ginley-Crowley Funeral Home in Medway.
