Obituary

Dwight Newton Lindley, 87, of Walpole died July 18 in Caritas Norwood Hospital. He was the husband of the late Janie (Morrison) Lindley who died in 2001.
Born in Montclair, New Jersey, July 4, 1920, the son of the late Theodore and Evelyn (Cruikshank) Lindley, Professor Lindley had lived in Clinton, New York for many years prior to moving to Walpole in 1996.
Professor Lindley graduated from Deerfield Academy in 1938 and earned his B.A. from Hamilton College in 1942, following his service in the Army, he earned his MA from Columbia in 1947 and later a PhD from Columbia University Faculty of Arts and Sciences in English and Comparative Literature in 1958.
He taught for 2 years at Bowdoin College in Maine and then spent the remainder of his career at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York.
He began there in 1952 progressing to hold the Hamilton B. Tompkins Professor English. During his tenure at Hamilton, he spent six years as the chairman of the English department and one year as acting Dean, from 1974-75. He co-edited with Francis E. Mineka four volumes of the later letters of John Stuart Mill. He retired in 1982.
Professor Lindley was a master sergeant in the Army during World War II. He served in the 1263rd Bn Engr Bn Combat Battalion which reached the Elbe River as the War ended.
He is survived by his son, David M. Lindley and his wife, Jane of New York, his daughters, Marguerite “Peggy” Almanas and her husband, Robert of Franklin and Ann Aranguren and her husband, Carlos of Madrid, Spain.
He is also survived by his grandchildren; Camilla Lindley Lynch and her husband, Brian Lynch, Carolyn Lindley, Rachel, Kathryn and Sara Almanas and Maria and Clara Aranguren. He is also survived by his nephews, Peter, John and Dan Lindley.
His memorial service will be held on Friday, July 27 in Grace Episcopal Church in Norwood at 10:00 a.m.
Private burial will be in Hamilton College Cemetery in Clinton, New York.
Calling hours will be on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. in the Ginley Funeral Home 892 Main St., Walpole.
