Henry “Bert” Herbert Babcock, 85, of Derry, NH, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2026, at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, NH. He was born on May 12, 1941, in New York City, a son of the late Henry and Fran (Taggert) Babcock.
Bert was a man of wide-ranging interests, deep knowledge, and an unmistakable personality. Wonderfully quirky and always ready for a conversation, he found great joy in sharing what he knew. A quick phone call could become a lengthy exchange, and a visit to look at books could turn into a long and memorable afternoon. In the many messages shared since his passing, friends and colleagues have returned to his kindness, his generosity, and how much they simply enjoyed his company.
Before becoming an antiquarian bookseller in 1976, Bert taught French at Boston University and Colby-Sawyer College. He followed his passion for books by opening a used bookstore in Derry. The shop lasted only a year or so, but the business that followed, run from home and built around catalogs specializing in modern first editions, would continue for five decades. He remained involved until the end.
His curiosity extended well beyond books. Bert spoke more than half a dozen languages and loved music in all its forms, especially classical music, preferably played at deafening volume through the speakers in the front library of his home. He loved movies, particularly foreign films, enjoyed chess, and shared an interest in anagrams and palindromes with his brother. He could be found cheering on his grandchildren at Little League games, spending time at the lake with his daughter’s family, or entertaining friends and family with countless stories. A definite night owl, he was always happy to stay up for one of the long conversations he called “bull sessions.”
He is survived by his son, Mika Babcock, and his wife Emily; his daughter, Nina Kapenas, and her husband James; five grandchildren; his brother, Kent Babcock; his partner, Kristine Cloyes; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Raija (Tiirikainen) Babcock, in 2016.
Following cremation, calling hours will be held on Sunday, November 1, 2026, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch Street, Derry.
