Obituary

Joan Gallagher, Ed. D, RNSC, BC, AOCN

April 25, 1946 – September 28, 2026

Joan Gallagher was born in Fall River, to Raymond and Constance Gallagher. She was the third of four children. She lived in Arlington, MA for most of her life, but spent her final years at The Residence at Cedar Dells.

Joan had a long and distinguished career as one of the top oncology nurses in the field. She worked at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center from 1982-1987, then moved to Mass General Hospital, where she worked throughretirement. Her list of accomplishments and contributions are remarkable. She was awarded the Rita P. Kelleher Award from Boston College, The Linda W. Adams Award from The American Cancer Society, and many more commendations. She spoke at medical conferences all over the world and published over 50 articles and posters in oncology journals. Her commitment to easing the burden of patients and their families was unwavering.

Joan’s faith was strong and joyful, and something she lived every day. She is survived by her nephews (Michael and Christopher) and their families. She also leaves behind a group of fellow nurses, all graduates of St. Anne’s Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1967, who were Joan’s lifelong friends.

Joan Gallagher passed away peacefully. Appropriately, a fellow nurse was by her side.
