Thomas F. Phelan, 90, of Charlton formerly of Worcester died Thursday, September 3rd in UMASS Memorial Hospital – Memorial Campus. His wife of 61 years, Barbara A. (Rydstrom) Phelan died in 2024. He leaves a daughter, Sharon Missiewicz of Leicester; his son, Michael Phelan of Charlton; two grandsons, Thomas J. Missiewicz and his wife, Brianna and John Missiewicz. A great grandson, Colton all of Leicester.
He was born in Worcester, the son of Patrick and Mary (Howe) Phelan and graduated from South High School. He proudly served his country as a member of the Massachusetts Army National Guard with the 181st Infantry. Following his military service, Thomas built a long and dedicated career with Stop & Shop, where he worked for 42 years before his retirement.
Thomas was a longtime member of Our Lady of the Angels Church, Worcester and currently attended Mass at St. Joseph’s Church and remained active in his community throughout the years. He generously volunteered his time with Ty Cobb Little League, and Babe Ruth supporting local youth and lending a hand wherever he was needed.
In his later years, Thomas enjoyed the companionship and activities offered through the Charlton Senior Center. He was a member of the Golden Age Club as well as the Friendly Friends of the Charlton Senior Center, where he enjoyed staying active and spending time with others.
His visitation will be on Friday, September 11th from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, 10 H Putnam Road Extension, Charlton followed by his funeral Mass at 11:00 a. m. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, 260 Cambridge Street, Worcester. O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 529 Park Avenue, Worcester, is assisting the family with arrangements.
