Robert K. Winston, 71, of Ocean Grove, NJ and formerly of West Boylston, MA passed away peacefully in the place he found music, art, friendship, and happiness at “The Jersey Shore” in the Asbury Park area.
He leaves three daughters: Ashlee Voyiatzis and her husband, Nicholas of West Boylston, Audra Winston of West Boylston, and Eleanora Winston of Worcester; two brothers: Brian Winston and his wife, Alison, of Rhode Island, and Kenneth Winston and his wife, Ellen of Needham; two sisters: Diane Silva and her husband, Tony of Easton, and Terri Benoit and her husband, William of West Yarmouth.
He was affectionately known as “Pops” by his three granddaughters, Kathryn and Mia Voyiatzis, and Charlotte Winston. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; his former wife, Karen (Flink) Winston of West Boylston.
He was born in Worcester, the son of the late Robert and Betty Ann (Gurney) Winston. A
graduate of West Boylston High School, Class of 1973, “Bobby” was a standout athlete and
accomplished musician whose outgoing nature earned him countless lifelong friends. He
continued his education at the University of Miami and later at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he excelled as a star baseball player. He also played baseball for many summers in the “Newport Sunset League” in RI. Robert went on to earn his MBA at Anna Maria College in Paxton, MA.
Robert started his career as a teacher and athletic coach in the West Boylston and Millbury school systems. He then enjoyed a successful career as a marketing executive, spending more than twenty five years working in corporate communications with various PR firms and health insurance agencies throughout New England.
Music remained one of Robert’s greatest passions. He played the guitar, bongos, harmonica, sang, but was most notably known as exceptionally talented drummer. He found immense joy performing with many bands, especially the Beatles tribute band, “Not the Beatles” in the 1980’s. Robert loved all music and shared his love of music with all who surrounded him.
A devoted New England sports fan, Robert faithfully cheered on his favorite hometown teams through every season. He was equally devoted to his Catholic faith, attending Mass regularly and finding strength, comfort, guidance, and peace in his beliefs throughout his life.
Whether behind the drum set or surrounded by family and friends, Robert’s quick wit, “tall tales” and fun nature were unmistakable. To know “Bobby” was to love him – a friend to all.
Some of Robert’s happiest moments were spent with his family and near the ocean. Whether walking along the beach, listening to the rhythm of the waves, or simply taking in the peaceful beauty of the shoreline, he found a sense of tranquility that reflected his appreciation for life’s simple blessings.
Above all, Robert will be remembered for his personality and kind heart. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him, and he will be deeply missed.
