Obituary

Mulchand P. Bissessar, 89, of Worcester, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 26, at home, surrounded by the family who loved him so dearly.

Born in Noitgedacht, Wakenaam, Guyana, Mulchand built a remarkable life defined by hard work, adventure, generosity, and an unwavering love for his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 66 years, Kanta Dei (Rabilall) Bissessar; his daughter, Drupatty Prashad, her husband, Hardatt, and their three children of Worcester, with whom he lovingly made his home and was cared for with extraordinary devotion since 2018; his son, Tulsie B. Bissessar and his wife, Davika, of Bonaire; his daughter, Lela Raghubeer and her husband, Krish, of New York; his son, Manesh Bissessar of New York; thirteen cherished grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and countless nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends who were blessed to know his love.

Raised in the close-knit community of Friendship, Wakenaam, Mulchand never forgot where he came from. The values of Guyana remained woven into every part of his life. He spent his younger years working the rich soil of his homeland before taking to the sea, where he built a distinguished career as captain of several cargo ships. The ocean carried him to distant ports across the world, each voyage adding another story to the endless collection he delighted in sharing with family and friends. He traveled widely, but no matter how far he wandered, Guyana was always home in his heart.

Those who knew Mulchand knew a man who embraced life wholeheartedly. He was equally an accomplished businessman, a respected captain, a devoted husband and father, a lover of music, and a gifted storyteller. Music was the heartbeat of his home. His record player could often be heard from streets away, filling the neighborhood with melodies that invited everyone to celebrate alongside him. He was often the first to dance, quick to laugh, and happiest when surrounded by the people he loved. His joy was contagious, and it had a way of drawing others in.

His home was a place of warmth and welcome. No visitor ever felt like a stranger for long. There was always another chair at the table, another story waiting to be told, and another reason to celebrate. His grandchildren remember a grandfather who somehow always had a piece of candy or a small toy tucked into his pocket just for them. They remember gathering around to hear stories of distant countries, bustling ports, remarkable people, and adventures from a lifetime spent crossing oceans. Time spent with him always felt like an occasion.

Quiet acts of generosity defined his life as much as any of his accomplishments. He gave freely of his time, his wisdom, and whatever he had to offer without expecting anything in return. His kindness reached far beyond his own family, touching neighbors, friends, and even those who had only just met him. Many lives are gentler, happier, and more hopeful because of his willingness to help, to encourage, and to welcome others with an open heart.

He had a special affection for dogs and every creature he encountered, treating all living things with the same gentle spirit that defined his character. It was impossible to spend time with him without feeling seen, welcomed, and valued.

Mulchand’s greatest legacy is not measured by the places he traveled or the work he accomplished, but by the love he poured into the people around him. His family will carry him forward every time they laugh a little louder, as he always did, step onto the dance floor without hesitation, welcome someone new with open arms, tell a well-loved story for the hundredth time, or gather together simply because being together was reason enough to celebrate. His was a life rich in love, music, generosity, and adventure, and its melody will continue to echo through the generations that follow.
