Obituary for the Boston Globe Sister Theresa (Terry) Ryan, SC (Sister Peter Therese) beloved Sister of Charity, Halifax for 72 years, entered peacefully into God’s loving embrace on July 15, 2026 at Elizabeth Seton Residence, Wellesley, MA. The daughter of the late Joseph A. Ryan and Margaret (Dwyer) Ryan, Sister Theresa was born in and loved her home, Brooklyn, NY. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Sister Patricia Ryan, SC (Sister Paul Therese) and Eileen Kelleher, and her brothers, Joseph Ryan and Donald Ryan. Sister Theresa leaves her loving sister, Margaret Sweeney and her brother, Raymond Ryan, many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, great grand nieces and nephews, cousins, and her Sisters throughout the Congregation. Sister Theresa was born to teach and did so for fifty-three years. She had the rare gift of engaging her students in the process of learning, not just acquiring information, and made it exciting as well as challenging. In her early years in ministry, Sister Theresa served at the former Saint Kevin School in Dorchester, MA and then at the former Saint Peter School, Lowell, MA. After a brief assignment at Saint Sebastian School in Woodside, NY she was missioned to Sacred Heart School, Riverton, NJ and then, returning to Saint Sebastian School, served there for the next thirty-two years. Along with her teaching assignments, Sister Theresa also served in the parish as a religious education teacher, a Eucharistic Minister and a visitor to the sick and homebound. Sisters of Charity, Halifax are called to “give joyful witness to love—the love of God and of all persons”. A Sister of Charity to the core, Sister Theresa brought joy and love wherever she found herself. She retired to Marillac Residence in Wellesley, MA in 2017 touched and blessed the lives of all her sisters in the community and the staff alike. Funeral Services for Sister Theresa Ryan, SC will take place on Friday, July 24, 2026 at Mount Saint Vincent, 125 Oakland Street, Wellesley, MA. Wake at 9:15 AM followed by a Prayer Service at 10:15 AM and the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:45 AM. Interment at Saint Mary Cemetery, Needham, MA immediately following the Mass. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Sister Theresa may be made to the Sisters of Charity, 125 Oakland Street, Wellesley, MA 02481. |
