Marlene "Chickie" (Simmons) McDermott
7/17/2026

Marlene "Chickie" (Simmons) McDermott, 88, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born on July 9, 1938, Marlene was the beloved daughter of the late Mary Kirby. She was the loving mother of Kelli McDermott; cherished grandmother of Ian Bowers, Alexis Bowers (Mike Rawding), and Jennifer Bowers; proud great-grandmother of Sonny and River Rawding; dear sister of James Simmons; and sister of the late Sandra Bearse.

Marlene was a hardworking woman whose dedication and strong work ethic were evident throughout her life. She held many different jobs before retiring from the United States Postal Service after nearly 30 years of devoted service.

She treasured the lifelong friendships she formed while growing up in Mission Hill and remained close to many of those friends throughout her life. Marlene was known for her quick wit, wonderful sense of humor, unwavering strength, and generous heart. Above all else, she loved her family fiercely. There was nothing she wouldn't do for her daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and the love she gave so freely will continue to live on through each of them.

Though her family grieves her loss deeply, they find comfort in knowing she is at peace and reunited with her beloved mother.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of Hebrew Rehabilitation Center. Their exceptional care, kindness, and dignity brought comfort not only to Marlene but also to those who loved her. They truly are angels on earth, and their compassion will never be forgotten.

The family will celebrate Marlene's life privately.
