Stephen Frederick Horne, age 73, of Medford passed away on Tuesday, July 14th. Born in Washington, DC, he spent his childhood in Bangalore, India, and Vienna, Austria, the son of the late Joseph Anthony and Elsie Matilda (Lukat) Horne. Stephen has lived in Medford since 2020.

He was Senior Scientist at Energetiq Technology, Inc. since it was founded in 2004 until he retired in 2020. He worked for ten years in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Alcator Fusion Program, specializing in MHD control. He received his Ph.D. in Plasma Physics from the University of Wisconsin.

Stephen was a true Renaissance Man: a scientist, rock climber, sailor, carpenter, and even builder of motorcycle engines, he especially loved to cook and bring people together around the table. He was known far and wide for his pesto. He took great joy in sharing music, as well as food, with others. He was a master chess player. An avid and lifelong learner, he had just begun learning to play the banjo.

Stephen was the beloved husband of Cynthia Staples, and the devoted father of Brigit Schroeder and her husband Christopher Wolff, Rebecca Horne and their wife Amelia Stehn, and Deborah Horne and her husband Earl Reynolds.

A celebration of his life will be held at Trinity Church in the City of Boston on Saturday August 1, 2026 at 10am.
