Obituary

Philip Crimmings Riley of Wellesley, Cataumet, and Stuart, FL passed away peacefully on July 10, 2026, surrounded by his loving family after a prolonged illness. He was 87.

Born in Boston on April 24, 1939, Philip was the son of Russell F. Riley and Aileen Crimmings Riley. He was raised in Weston, Massachusetts, and attended the Fessenden School in West Newton and the Canterbury School in New Milford, Connecticut. He graduated from Georgetown University in 1961 and earned his M.B.A. from Boston College's College of Business Administration in 1963.

Philip proudly served his country in the United States Army, where he was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, and was honorably discharged in 1970.

Following his military service, Philip returned to Boston to lead the family business, the J.J. Crimmings Company, one of New England's oldest and most respected dental supply firms. Founded by his grandfather, John J. Crimmings, at the turn of the twentieth century, the company served generations of dentists throughout New England. Leadership of the business first passed to Philip's aunt, Catherine Crimmings, who guided the company with distinction for many years before Philip succeeded her. As the company's final family president, Philip led the business until its eventual sale during a period of sweeping consolidation in the dental supply industry, bringing to a close a proud family enterprise that had endured for generations.

Following the sale of J.J. Crimmings, Philip remained in the dental supply business for many years. He cultivated enduring relationships with dentists throughout New England, earning their trust through his integrity, deep knowledge, impeccable taste, and unwavering commitment to their success. Whether helping young practitioners establish their first offices or advising longtime clients on equipment and practice design, Philip took pride in ensuring every detail reflected the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship. Many of his professional relationships evolved into lifelong friendships.

In 1968, Philip married Kathleen Duane, and together they built a loving family. They were blessed with two children, Philip D. Riley of New York and Katharine Holly Riley. She predeceased her father in 2001, a loss he carried quietly for the rest of his life.

Philip was a longtime member of Brae Burn Country Club in West Newton, the Wianno Club in Osterville, Massachusetts, and Mariner Sands Country Club in Stuart, Florida. He treasured the lifelong friendships he made through these communities and especially cherished time spent with family on Cape Cod and in Florida.

An insatiably curious man, Philip had a lifelong passion for geography, history, and exploration. He delighted in planning adventurous journeys to far-flung destinations and found great joy in sharing those experiences with his family. Blessed with an encyclopedic memory, he could effortlessly recall not only the history and geography of the places he visited, but also the finest restaurants, hidden gems, and unforgettable sights. Long before smartphones and travel apps, family and friends routinely turned to Philip for trusted advice on where to go, what to see, and where to enjoy a memorable meal.

Above all, Philip will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, uncle, and friend. He carried forward his family's legacy with quiet determination and integrity while living a life marked by kindness, humility, curiosity, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. His warmth, generosity, gentle spirit, and genuine interest in others enriched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know him.

A private family burial will be held on July 23, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church in Wellesley Hills Massachusetts. A Celebration of Life will follow at Brae Burn Country Club.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Mariner Sands Foundation, Mariner Sands Country Club, 6500 SE Mariner Sands Drive, Stuart, FL 34997.
