James Friedrich Callahan of Chelsea and Gloucester, left us on June 24th after a brief illness. He, the only child of Stella (Dobrowolski) and James Callahan, ever the proud Bostonian, born at the Boston Lying In, on November 2, 1955. Jim spent his early years in Dorchester surrounded by his favorite cousins and family, before moving to Marshfield, Massachusetts. He was a 1973 graduate of Marshfield High School, then attended University of Massachusetts, Amherst, majoring in history and Chinese language.

From an early age Jim was interested in Asian and Middle Eastern art and culture; from the most delicate porcelains to the deadliest daggers. He participated in his first antique show at age 9, with the late Hazel Sjoberg of the Hatherly Shop. Most recently the Asian expert at Tremont Auctions in Sudbury, Massachusetts, he was also the Asian specialist Skinner and James Julia auction houses, and participated in the PBS Antiques Roadshow as an Asian specialist for 26 years. While with the Roadshow, he presented their first million-dollar appraisal. Always generous with his time and knowledge, Jim happily address school groups, and lectured and volunteered his appraisal services for numerous charities and institutions.

He was an excellent cook; his meals were the stuff of legend, and he never hesitated to share his culinary creations with family, friends, and even total strangers who always appreciated his hospitality and kindness. The door was always open, he was generous and giving to all, and always enjoyed a good discussion regarding politics, history, or current events. Jim had a unique and caring personality, and would never hesitate to help anyone who asked. Even though he actually visited China, he was mostly an armchair traveler, always interested in people and history.

Jim leaves his wife of 42 years, Charlene (DeLena) Callahan, his caring brother-in-law, Lou DeLena, many beloved cousins including Sharon and Jack Marinello, his “sister” Colleene Fesko, and numerous friends and acquaintances worldwide.

A celebration of his life will be held on July 14, 3-7 PM, at the American Legion, 321 Winthrop Street, Medford, MA.
