Ledyard – Joan Grace Watkins (Spencer), 83, of Ledyard, CT passed away peacefully at home on June 18, 2026. She was born December 5, 1942, in New London, CT. She spent her childhood days in Old Mystic with her parents Jessie (Crouch) Spencer and Richard Spencer as well as her brother Earle Spencer Jr, all who predeceased her.
The love of her life, Gerald “Jerry” Watkins, welcomed her in Heaven with loving arms. We find peace in knowing they have been reunited, together once again, along with their grandson Gerald “Jerry” Watkins III.
Joan is survived by her daughter, Roslyn Watkins, of New Gloucester, ME. Her son, Gerald “Jerry” Watkins Jr and wife Paula (Raffield) of Preston, CT. As well as her grandchildren Dale Watkins (Tra) of New Rochelle, NY, Kathryn Watkins (Josh) of East Hampton, CT, Matthew Watkins (Jordan) of Groton, CT and Ceara Gonzales of Ledyard, CT. Joan will be greatly missed by her niece and nephews, Joyce, Bobby and Earle.
Joan had a passion for teaching young minds and spent several decades at Ledyard Center Nursey School. Above all, she treasured her family and played a significant role in helping raise her grandchildren. Her love for the water, camping, flowers and the color blue will forever remain in our memories.
Joan was a dedicated member of the Old Mystic Baptist Church and continued her love for services and gathering at Poquonnock Bridge Baptist Church until her passing, she leaves behind many friends and a helpful, supportive congregation. She was always at home surrounded by the love of her church family.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 3, 2026, at 10:00am, Gales Ferry Cemetery, 14 Hurlbutt Road, Gales Ferry, CT with a reception to follow at the Gales Ferry Fire House, Route 12.
