Obituary

Helga C.M.R. Hardacker
July 17, 1930-May 27, 2026

It is with great sorrow we announce that Helga passed away peacefully on May 27, 2026 seven weeks shy of her 96th birthday. Helga was born in Germany on July 17, 1930, the daughter of the late Johannes E. G. Bree and the late Hildegard M. A. (Lesse) Bree.

Helga was an adventurous and deeply independent woman whose life spanned continents and generations. She was of quick wit, rigid opinion, a lover of classical music, nature and all animals. She was equally comfortable wielding a hammer in well worn jeans to dressing elegantly for an evening at the opera.

Helga worked in the mental health field the majority of her life, primarily in the art therapy department at McLean Hospital. On her farm in Carlisle, she provided equine assisted therapy for individuals with mental health challenges and pioneered a unique horticulture based residential program for adults transitioning from inpatient hospitalization.

Helga was a life long horse enthusiast. She owned several breeds of horses and ponies, but was especially proud of her Arabians.

In her later years, following two strokes and with decreased mobility, she continued to be an avid reader, a PBS devotee and would discuss family genealogy with great enthusiasm.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Hans-Georg Bree, her sister Roswitha Bree and her grandson Dylan Hardacker.

She is survived by her daughter Diana O’Brien, her son Mathias Hardacker, her brother Wennemar (Elfriede) Bree, Hans-Georg’s widow Almut, grandchildren Erica (Gabe) Dennison, Ian (Julia) O’Brien, Daniel Weidenfeld, Leah Hardacker, Liam Hardacker and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

She will be remembered for her innate curiosity and resourcefulness. Her life story is one of reinvention and resilience. A journey that reminds us all of the beauty of living fully.

A private memorial will be scheduled in the future.
