Mary Joan Maloney passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, June 5, 2026, with her daughters by her side. She was 92.
Born in Waltham, Massachusetts, on March 8, 1934, Mary Joan Mogan was the daughter of the late John B. Mogan Jr. and Mary C. (Hines) Mogan.
One of 13 children, she helped care for her younger siblings from an early age and began working at Raytheon at 16 to help financially support her family.
In 1954, she married Robert “Bob” Maloney, and together they built a home in Franklin, where Joan was known for her warmth, generosity, and open door to family and friends alike.
Joan faced profound loss in her life with strength, determination, and an unwavering commitment to life and her family.
After Bob’s death in 1994, Joan remained devoted to her family and friends. She later fulfilled a longtime dream by moving to North Port, Florida, where she built a new community of friends and enjoyed nearly 20 years of seasonal life between Florida, Texas, and Massachusetts before eventually returning to be near family.
Proud of her hard-working nature, Joan kept a meticulous home and yard. She also worked outside the home at Raytheon in Waltham, GE in Ashland, several Franklin dry cleaners, Mattress Man, Foxboro Company, and Thermo Fisher Scientific.
She loved gardening, decorating every season and holidays and reading the daily newspaper cover to cover to keep up with the world. Joan was also a passionate sports fan, especially of the Boston Bruins and New England Patriots.
She cherished time spent talking and laughing with both those she loved and those she’d just met. Her friendly manner, kindness, humor, and generosity of spirit will be remembered by all who knew her.
Joan was predeceased by her husband, Robert “Bob” Maloney; a newborn son, Robert; her sons, Steven Phillip and Robert Jr.; and several beloved siblings.
She is survived by her daughters, Julieanne (Ken) Resnick, Patricia Maloney, and Suzanne Spellman; her grandson Joshua Phillips of Texas, his children Steven and Stephanie Phillips, and great-grandson Atlas Phillips; her granddaughter Sarah Blanchette of New Hampshire and her children, Samuel and Amelia Blanchette; Samantha Spellman of Rhode Island; Mollie Spellman-Brodeur (Kyle) of Texas and their daughter, Fern; Emma Spellman and her son, Dillon; her siblings Allen (Elaine) Mogan and Mary (Rick) Mathis; her Aunt Pauline Wright; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the hardworking, kind, and supportive staff and caregivers at The Alliance at Maples in Wrentham. In particular, we would like to thank Jojo, Jenna, Caroline, “Frankie” and Lisa. We are also deeply grateful to every member of Hope Health Hospice who cared for Joan and supported her family during the final weeks and days of her life.
