Obituary

James "Jim" Thompson of Winchester, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026. Jim lived a remarkable life marked by intellectual curiosity, professional achievement, devotion to his family, and a lifelong commitment to education and service.

Jim is survived by his three sons, Michael, Brian, and Andrew; his siblings, Ann, Neil, Leanne, Joan, Alan, and Steven; and Jane Thompson, the mother of his children, with whom he maintained a close friendship and shared a lifelong commitment to their family. He was predeceased by his parents, Melvin and Priscilla Thompson, and his sister, Gloria.

Jim was a man of extraordinary accomplishments who lived a remarkable life, despite having far too little time. It is inspiring to think that a boy raised on the Big Island of Hawaii, where his father worked and the family lived on a sugar cane plantation, would go on to achieve so much.

Jim was deeply grateful for his parents' dedication to his education. They provided endless encouragement and tutoring, helping him discover his exceptional abilities. He often said that if it were not for his parents and the guidance of a nun at St. Joseph School in Hilo, Hawaii, he may never have realized his potential. Their belief in him helped pave the way for his acceptance to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering with high honors and served as president of the National Honor Society.

After graduation, Jim worked as an engineer on an oil barge in Africa during a Cholera epidemic. During that experience, he realized his true passion was helping people. He returned to school and pursued a career in medicine, eventually becoming an anesthesiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he cared for patients for many years.

Throughout his career, Jim remained committed to learning and innovation. While practicing at MGH, he returned to MIT to earn a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, served as a visiting researcher at the National Institutes of Health, and was awarded an NIH research grant as well as an SBA grant. Education was one of the most important values in Jim's life, and he continually encouraged others to pursue knowledge and work hard to achieve their goals.

Above all, Jim was a devoted and generous father to his three sons, Michael, Brian, and Andrew. He strongly encouraged and supported their education, always challenging them to reach their full potential. Although they may not have fully appreciated his high expectations at the time, they are forever grateful for the countless ways he prepared them for life and instilled in them the values of education, perseverance, and hard work.

In addition, Jim encouraged his family to play tennis, one of his favorite activities. He not only excelled at the sport but also cherished the friendships, camaraderie, and sense of community it brought into his life.

Jim was a proud man who expected much of himself yet remained humble about his many gifts and accomplishments. Our family is grateful that he is finally able to rest in peace after many difficult years battling an illness that challenged his independence, pride, and dignity. We are forever thankful for the compassionate care he received from the many selfless healthcare professionals whose dedication ensured he was treated with kindness, respect, and exceptional care throughout his journey.

Jim's legacy lives on through his family, the countless patients he cared for, the colleagues and friends whose lives he touched, and the values of education, perseverance, and service that he passed on to future generations.

Family and Friends are invited to attend visiting hours for Jim on Sunday June 14, 2026, from 3-5PM at the Casper Funeral Home 187 Dorchester St. South Boston, MA.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to Donate to St. Joseph School Hilo, Hawaii | QUAERITE PRIMUM REGNUM DEI in recognition of the profound influence the school had on Jim's life. The education, mentorship, and faith he received there helped shape the man he became and inspired his lifelong dedication to learning, service, and helping others succeed.
