Michael P. Higgins
5/30/2026

Michael P. Higgins, 68, of Woburn, unexpectedly passed away on May 30, 2026, while visiting California. Michael was born in Winchester and was the son of the late Honorable Mayor Thomas M. Higgins and Margaret M. (Connors) Higgins.

Michael grew up in Woburn with his family next to the White Elementary School and enjoyed all his time with friends and family in the Hilltop neighborhood. Those early years in Hilltop gave him a deep sense of community and lifelong friendships he always treasured.
Michael had a lifelong love of soccer, both as a player at Woburn High School and Westfield State College, as well as a coach throughout his adult life. He started coaching through Woburn Youth Soccer, and continued with various club programs, at the collegiate level at Endicott College, Woburn High School, as well as semi-pro and Olympic development teams. His voice echoed across many fields in eastern Massachusetts.

Above all, Michael was passionate about helping people unconditionally. For over 30 years, he served as a Probation Officer at the Woburn District Court. This inspired him to co-develop HEAT (Heroin Education Awareness Task Force), a revolutionary community initiative designed to combat the opioid and heroin epidemic by educating parents and youth, while actively connecting struggling individuals with voluntary treatment. After his retirement from the court, he continued to help by serving as the Substance Abuse Coordinator in Billerica, MA, where he continued to grow his legacy as a trusted voice in the community.

Michael enjoyed spending time in Hampton Beach, NH, and was a proud member of the Towanda Club. He loved entertaining people, always ready to turn on the grill and scoop a cup of his famous clam chowder for his friends and family.
Michael was the loving father of Lindsay Higgins and her husband Shaun Garvey, Vanessa Higgins, and Patrice Larson and her husband Robert Larson, and proud grandfather of Cooper Garvey. Michael is also survived by his siblings: Patricia Meagher and her husband Matthew Meagher, James Higgins, Ann Marie Hardy and her husband Charles Hardy, Thomas Higgins Jr., Elizabeth Higgins, Mark Higgins, and his brother-in-law Rollin Durant married to his late sister, Mary Durant. His extended family includes many cousins, nieces, and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly and cherished all the memorable times together.

Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours at the McLaughlin - Dello Russo Family Funeral Home, 60 Pleasant St., Woburn, Monday, June 8th, from 3 to 8 p.m. and again on Tuesday morning, June 9th, at 9 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated in St. Charles Church, 280 Main St., Woburn, at 10 a.m. Services will conclude with interment at Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.
