Barbara A. (Sharples) Szaro, 89, of Westport, passed away on April 21, 2026 at her home in Westport, Massachusetts.
Born in 1937 to Edward Sharples and Winifred (Gifford) Sharples, Barbara was brought up on the family's farm on Adamsville Road in Westport. When she was young, she would travel with her brother James to Fall River to deliver eggs to customers there.
Barbara graduated from Westport High School and went to Bridgewater State University, where she received her teaching degree.
Barbara returned to Westport and worked in the Westport School System, teaching English and music for 30 years.
Barbara was married to the love of her life, Henry Szaro for 51 years until he passed away in 2011. They did everything together. They loved to travel and had a home in Florida.
Barbara adored her great-nephew, Devin Paul, his wife Brianna and her great-niece, Kendall Furtado, her wife Leanna, lovingly treating them as if they were her own children. She also had a loving relationship with her nephew Kevin Sharples, who passed away in 1992.
In addition to her brother James, who still lives in Westport, Barbara is survived by brother Dr. Edward Sharples of Ferndale, Michigan. She is predeceased by brother Lynwood Sharples who died in 2003.
She also had several other nieces, nephews, great-nephews and great-nieces.
After her husband passed away, Barbara was cared for by her niece, Bonnie Sharples Paul and Bonnie's fiancé, Reynold Joseph. Bonnie called Barbara her "Second Mother."
Bonnie would like to thank everyone who supported Barbara over the years, including her neighbor Melanie Rapoza along with AccentCare Hospice, especially Erin Ripley.
