Obituary

1957-2026

James E. Cunningham, Jr., 69, a friend to all who knew him, passed away on April 7, 2026, in Oxnard, California. Born on January 1, 1957, in Illinois, he moved to California as a young child with his family, and made it his lifelong home.

Jim was the light of our family, known for his sense of humor and the playful antics that brought laughter to everyone around him. He was naturally sociable and had a gift for making friends wherever he went, leaving a lasting impression on all who met him.

A great storyteller, Jim could captivate a room with his words and memories. He had the best voice, and his laugh was unforgettable—warm and full of life. He also had an appreciation for history and found joy in watching classic television shows.

He had a deep love for animals, especially his beloved dogs Bear and Cinco, who preceded him in passing, and Daisy, the pug he shared with his partner, Danielle.

He enjoyed traveling, bike riding, boating, cooking, gardening, walking along the beach, and watching football—DA BEARS!—all simple moments that brought him happiness. He was an amazing woodworker by trade, a profession he took great pride in. And for those who knew him from years past, Jim will always be remembered as a truly fantastic bartender.

Jim loved his family and friends deeply, and that love was returned many times over. He shared a close bond with Danielle’s family, holding dear the memory of those who passed before him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Trudy and James, Sr.; his brother, Walter; and his grandparents, aunts, and uncles. He is survived by his longtime partner, Danielle; his brother, Chris (Brenda); his sister, Kathy; his sister-in-law, Olivia; his niece, Katrina (Carter); Danielle’s mother, Peggy; her brothers, Darren (Maria) and Chris; her aunt, Joanne; and numerous cousins, as well as many wonderful friends.

In lieu of flowers, if you would like to honor his love of animals, please consider making a donation in his memory to your favorite animal charity.

A private memorial will be held at sea at a later date.

Cheers, Jim—with all our love, you are forever in our hearts, and forever Chris and Kathy’s little “bother.” Rest in paradise.
