“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away”
Revelation 21:4 King James Version
With profound sadness and deep love, we announce the passing of John F. Reid, who was called home to eternal rest with his Lord and Savior on April 12, 2026, following a sudden illness. He was 78 years old.
The name “John,” of Hebrew origin, means “God has been gracious.” And to all who knew and loved him, it is evident that God’s grace was present throughout John’s life—blessing him with the rare gift of living fully, freely, and on his own terms.
Born on July 4, 1947, in Boston, Massachusetts, John was the youngest of three sons born to Charles and Elaine Hoyte Reid—affectionately known as “The Reid Gentlemen.” From an early age, he carried a spirit that was both strong and kind, with just enough rebellion to ensure he lived life his way.
John was a man who wore many hats, but above all, he was a devoted father, partner, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He helped raise three beautiful daughters—Kelley Montgomery, Nicola Montgomery, and Adina Montgomery, instilling in them strength, compassion, and resilience. He shared a loving and enduring bond with his partner of 26 years, Prendee Wright, a relationship built on loyalty, laughter, and deep respect.
A proud graduate of Medford High School Class of 1965, John went on to dedicate 38 years of service to General Electric. Known for his leadership and strong work ethic, he built a career marked by commitment and pride. Even in retirement, his contributions continued to be recognized, including a community service award in January 2025 honoring his impact in West Medford.
Affectionately known as “Johnny,” he was the “Mayor of West Medford”—a title earned through his unwavering presence, deep community involvement, and genuine love for people. He was not just known in West Medford—he was truly felt.
John was instrumental in the founding of the West Medford Reunion in 1997, growing it into a multi-day celebration that brought people together from near and far. He also helped nurture and strengthen a group known as “The Community Spirit,” always working to unite people and uplift those around him.
Since 1988, John also served as a beloved bartender at American Legion Post #45. To many, he was more than a bartender—he was family. He created a space filled with laughter, stories, and connection, where everyone felt welcome.
Outside of his work and service, John embraced life with passion. He loved traveling, spending time with family and friends, and enjoying weekly camping trips with Prendee. He found joy in simple moments and created memories that will last for generations.
To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was proudly known as “Papa.” There was nothing he loved more than watching them grow, guiding them with wisdom, and surrounding them with unconditional love.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Elaine Hoyte Reid; his brother, Charles Allen Reid (Nancy); and his beloved granddaughter, Teasia S. Montgomery.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving companion, Prendee Wright; his brother, Richard William Reid (Deborah); his daughters, Kelley Montgomery, Nicola Montgomery, and Adina Montgomery; his grandchildren, DeAndre Montgomery, Dante Montgomery, Ne’Keisha Roberts-Montgomery, Christopher Roberts, Jr., Kamara Hampton II, and Jiamari Hampton; and his great-grandchildren, Jaron Montgomery, D’Amari Price, Kam’ren Fisher, Aliyah Roberts, Samiah Tucker, Kay’den Sales, Prince Roberts, Teasia Montgomery (the 2nd), Raja Moore, Rali Moore and Kai’Sohn Hampton , along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
John lived by his own words, which he shared a quote which he shared on his birthday in July 2025:
“Life’s journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting ‘Holy Shit…. what a ride!’”
And indeed, that is exactly how he lived his life.
John F. Reid lived a life defined not by what he had, but by what he gave—his time, his laughter, his wisdom, and above all, his love. His presence was a gift, and his absence leaves a space that can never be filled.
Though he is no longer with us in body, his spirit lives on—in every life he touched, every memory shared, and every bond he helped create.
Rest well, Johnny.
You truly lived, you were deeply loved, and you will never be forgotten.
John's funeral service will be celebrated in the Beals-Geake-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 29 Governors Avenue, Medford on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at 12:30 PM. Visitation will be prior to the service from 11 MA to 12:30 PM.
