
CORNISH- Fred “Harold” Bucknell, age 93, passed away on April 16, 2026, at the Gorham House from complications of a stroke. He was born in Hiram, Maine, to Fred and Mable Bucknell. He graduated from Cornish High School in 1950. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. In 1957, Harold married Norine Ring, a local Home Economics teacher originally from Sumner, Maine. Harold worked as a farmer, an excavator, a snowplower, road builder for MDOT, road commissioner for Hiram, timber cutter, and so many other things as warranted over the years. Harold’s contributions to the local communities also included volunteering with the Cornish Fire Department since he was a teen, Hiram Fire Warden, being a founding member of the Sacopee Rescue Unit, participation in countless water and land searches and rescues as he thoroughly enjoyed working with the local Warden Service. He was a member of the Greenleaf Lodge #117 in Cornish. Many locals will remember talking with Harold in the strawberry fields of Ossipee River Farm, which he ran for more than 20 years with his wife and kids. He will be remembered for his many stories, getting coffee with the locals at the old Hiram Creamery or Dall’s Diner, helping neighbors who needed a hand, checking the roads all winter at all hours. Harold is survived by his wife, Norine (Ring), whom he had visited almost daily at the Gorham House for the past 3 years; son Ray Bucknell and his wife Ellen of Gorham, daughter Marcia Gilpatrick and her husband Sam of Hiram, daughter Rachel Johns of Wolfeboro NH; six grandchildren–Nathan (Victoria), Adam, Travis (Meghan), Sabrina (Justin), Sebastian (Ally), Angelica; he was predeceased by a son, Warren Bucknell, a son-in-law, Steven Johns, and his six siblings. Visiting hours will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Friday, April 24, at Poitras, Neal & York Funeral Home, 71 Maple Street, Cornish, Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either the Cornish Fire Department (PO Box 400, Cornish ME 04020) or the SAD#55 Warren H. Bucknell Scholarship (via Rachel Johns, 12 Village Corner Rd, Ossipee NH 03864).
