Obituary

Robert Calnan
September 2, 1943 – April 11, 2026
BROWNFIELD – Robert Calnan, 82, passed away peacefully at his home on April 11, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Born on September 2, 1943, Robert was the son of the late James and Crystal Merrifield Calnan. After graduating from Porter High School, he served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Stationed in Okinawa, he worked in communications—a role that suited his lifelong attention to detail.
Following his honorable discharge, Robert worked at ITT in Kezar Falls and later at Sebago-Moc in Westbrook. He eventually joined W.H. Nichols in Portland, where he worked for many years until his retirement.
Robert and his wife, Maureen Burnham Calnan, shared 58 years of marriage. Together, they traveled across the country three times and enjoyed many cruises. While raising their family in Westbrook, Robert built a home in Brownfield that served as a summer home before becoming their full-time residence.
A talented craftsman, Robert was rarely without a project. He was particularly known for his skill with stained glass and his ability to build or fix almost anything by hand. He also gave back to his community, serving as a Webelos leader and as President of the Westbrook Kiwanis Club.
Robert was a constant presence for his family, always showing up for school events and milestones. He loved fishing the local ponds and made sure he always had nightcrawlers ready for the kids to join him. He affectionately called his grandchildren and great-grandchildren his "Little Whipper-snappers," and he was happiest when the house was full of them.
Robert was predeceased by his sons, Brent Calnan and Richard Gammon; his daughter-in-law, Jane Gammon; and his parents. He was also predeceased by his brothers, John and Dale Calnan; his sisters-in-law, Virginia Calnan and Nancy Calnan; and his brother-in-law, Nathaniel Gardiner Marshall.
He is survived by his wife, Maureen Calnan; his sons, Bryan Calnan and wife LeeAnn of Brownfield, and Craig Gammon and wife Tricia of Sarasota, FL; his siblings, Fern Mills and husband Thurman, Aleta Marshall, James Calnan, and his twin brother, Richard Calnan; and his sister-in-law, Sandra Calnan Webster.
His memory lives on through his "Whippersnappers": grandchildren Monica Gammon, Jessica Gammon, Heather Waldron, Alex Gammon, and Nicholas Gammon; great-grandchildren Evan Gammon, Ayden Brousseau-Works, Amber Phillips, Kimber Brousseau-Works, Katie Waldron, and Cassidy Waldron; great-great-grandchild Emi Gammon; and many nieces and nephews.
Robert was able to spend his final days at home in comfort and peace, thanks to the dedicated care and devotion of Monica and Bryan, as well as the support of the hospice nurses from Andwell Health.
At Robert’s request, there will be no funeral services. Burial will be determined at a later date.
