Evelyn M. (Leger) Stewart, 88, of New Bedford, passed away at home on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. She was the former wife of the late Charles Stewart, Sr.
Mrs. Stewart was born in Marion, daughter of the late Philip and Cora E. (Parker) Leger and had been a lifelong resident of New Bedford. She was a graduate of the former SMU, now UMass Dartmouth, graduating Magna Cum Laude attaining her bachelor's Degree in Psychology. She was also Vice-President of her class. Prior to retirement, she was a professional singer and traveled all over the country to perform. She loved music, singing, swimming and the beach. She had a very strong faith. Mrs. Stewart will be remembered for her pure heart and for most of all, being a beloved mother to her number one priority, her son, Charles, Jr.
Survivors include her son: Chares Stewart, Jr. and his fiancée Gina Desrochers of New Bedford; her daughter: Brenda Hopwood of Swansea; along with many nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Steven Leger, Philip Leger, Walter Leger, Paul Leger, Miriam Sylvia, Margie Milosek and Daisy Bernier.
Funeral service to which relatives and friends are invited will be Saturday, April 18, 2026 at the Kirby Funeral Home at 10:00 A.M.
Interment to follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Marion.
