Obituary

Mark S. Walas, 70, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2026, at home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Springfield on September 29, 1955, he was the son of the late Richard “Ace” Walas and Eileen (Breton) Chouinard. Mark was a proud graduate of Chicopee High School, Class of 1973. He dedicated over 50 years to helping run the family business, Lane Press, where his strong work ethic and commitment were evident to all who knew him. Mark was an avid pool player, golfer, and card enthusiast who cherished time spent with friends and family. He gave generously of his time as a coach, leading youth in baseball, softball, and basketball, and also shared his passion by teaching martial arts for many years. He was a familiar and friendly presence at Market Square Billiards, where he spent over three decades as both a patron and bartender. Above all, Mark will be remembered for his devotion to his family and the many lives he touched through his kindness, humor, and mentorship. He is survived by his beloved life partner of over 23 years, Kimberly Haight of Chicopee; his son, Matthew Walas and his wife Erika of Westfield; his stepdaughter, Sarah Fisher of Chicopee; his brother, Keith Walas and his wife Dianne of Granby; his stepsister, Pamela Cormier and her husband Michael of Ludlow; his stepbrother, Richard Chouinard of California; his cherished grandchildren, Mateo and Amelia; and his step-grandchildren, Hunter, Trey, and Ella. He was predeceased by his sister, Debra Rock. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Grise Funeral Home, 280 Springfield Street, Chicopee.
