Obituary

Virginia Jones, 81, of Stonington, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2026. Born on September 24, 1944 in New London, Virginia lived a life defined by service, faith, gratitude, and an extraordinary love for her family.

A trailblazer in every sense, Virginia made history as the first female fire commissioner in the state of Connecticut — a distinction that speaks to her courage, her leadership, and her lifelong dedication to her community. Her passion for the fire service ran deep in her family, with her three sons, Todd, Scott, and Keith Branche, each serving as volunteers, together contributing more than 75 years of combined service. She was immensely proud of the men they became.

Virginia retired from the Groton Public School System, where she served with the same quiet dedication she brought to everything in her life. At home, she found joy in tending her garden and had a boundless, tender heart for cats — forever opening her door to strays who somehow always seemed to find their way to her. She was known by all who encountered her as one of the most generous and grateful souls in any room — a woman whose deep faith was steady and whose spirit lifted those around her.

She is survived by her three beloved sons, Todd, Scott, and Keith Branche; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren, whose lives she shaped in ways they will carry forever. She is also survived by her brother, Arthur Saxton. Virginia deeply missed her sister Shirley, who passed away last June, and those who loved her take comfort knowing the two are now reunited.

Virginia Jones leaves behind a legacy not just of firsts, but of warmth, devotion, and grace — a woman who gave generously of herself to her community, her family, and even the smallest creatures who needed a home. She will be profoundly missed and forever cherished.

Her family will greet relatives and friends on Tuesday, March 10, from 9 to 11:00am at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that those wishing to honor Virginia’s memory consider making a donation to a local animal rescue or shelter of their choosing. Virginia had a lifelong, tender heart for animals — especially the strays who found their way to her door — and there is no more fitting tribute to her generous spirit than helping ensure other animals find the love and safety she so freely gave
