Richard C. "Big Rick" Capraro, Sr.
2/20/2026

Richard "Big Rick" Capraro, Sr., age 78, a devoted husband, proud father and grandfather, loyal friend, retired Medford firefighter, and lifelong Medford resident, passed away on February 20, 2026, after a long and courageous fight against the complications of diabetes and heart disease. He spent his last days in the presence of those who loved and adored him the most.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ruth (Upton) Capraro, his cherished three sons, Richard Jr., Michael and his wife Kristina, and Joseph. Also survived by his treasured grandchildren; Connor and Olivia, who brought him a special light later in his life. Brother of Joseph and his wife Vickie, Anthony and his late wife Pearl, and Edward and his wife Lucille. He is further survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews, and many lifelong friends who will miss him deeply. He was the son of the late Anthony Sr. and Frances (Downs), whose values of humility, kindness, and love carried with him throughout his life.

Richard was a US Navy veteran who served on the USS Intrepid in Vietnam. Big Rick honorably served as a Lieutenant with the Medford Fire Department, dedicating his life to protecting his community. The firehouse was more than a workplace for him— it was a brotherhood and a second home that he valued deeply.

Above all else, Big Rick`s proudest role was being a family man. His happiest moments were the simplest ones. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, relatives, and friends, whether it was playing cards, going up to Wells Beach, or sharing stories. Big Rick was a simple, humble and a great spirited person. His presence filled every room with warmth and laughter.

He was a loyal Boston sports fan who rarely missed a game, proudly cheering for the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, and Celtics. Watching a game with him meant spirited commentary, animated reactions, and plenty of passion. Big Rick took joy in the everyday- he loved watching tv on his recliner, napping with the dogs, and listening and chiming in the conversations happening in the other room, and of course —he wasn`t shy about enjoying a good meal.

Those who knew him will remember his enormous heart, his playful sense of humor, his goofy grin, and the steady reassurance that he was always there when you needed him. He loved openly and without reservation. His children knew, without question, how deeply they were loved. His grandchildren knew his arms were always open. His friends knew his loyalty had no limits. He formed easy, natural bonds with everyone he met — a gentle soul with a big personality and an even bigger capacity for love.

Big Rick`s legacy is not only in his years of service, but in the countless lives he touched— in the laughter he sparked, the stories he told, the protection he provided, and the unconditional love he gave so freely.
