Rita E. Shunney, 97 of Woonsocket died peacefully Tuesday February 17, 2026 at The Friendly Home. She was the loving wife of the late John J. Shunney. They were married on October 9, 1954 at Holy Family Church and shared nearly 40 years together until his passing in November of 1993.
Born and raised in Woonsocket she was the daughter of the late Omer and Exilda (Hardy) Michaud. She was a lifelong resident of the city and attended Holy Family School.
Rita was employed in the local textile industry for many years before retiring.
Rita was a longtime communicant of Precious Blood Church. She enjoyed displaying her skills during a good game of cards and keeping up with all the latest news of family and friends.
Rita will be remembered as a supportive presence at many events in conjunction with Woonsocket Knights of Columbus Council # 113 and General Moylan Assembly K of C 4th Degree.
Rita is survived by her devoted son John T. Shunney of Woonsocket.
She was the sister of the late Leo and Roland “Mitch” Michaud, Irene, Doris and Florida Michaud, Therese Carlevale and Jeannette Duquette. Rita is also survived by her extended family of many nieces and nephews and their families.
Everyone is invited to gather to honor, remember and pray for Rita at her funeral Friday February 27th at 9:00 am from the Menard-Lacouture Funeral Home 127 Carrington Ave. Woonsocket followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Precious Blood Church, Carrington Ave. Woonsocket. Rita will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband John at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Pascoag. Visiting hours are Thursday February 26th from 4:00-7:00pm.
