Mary A. (Downes) Mechan, 96 years of age on February 16, 2026, passed away peacefully in her beloved home with her family.
A proud, lifelong Charlestown native, she was married for 59 years to the late Robert A. (Bud) Mechan. Cherished mother of Ellen Ander of Randolph, MA, Bob Mechan of Edemeston, NY, Brian Mechan of Charlestown and Dr. Patti Mechan of Charlestown. Loving Nana to Erin, Chris, Greg, and Ryan. Daughter of the late John G. Downes and Catherine (Gill) Downes, and sister of the late John, James, and Catherine Downes. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends and neighbors.
Mary enjoyed shopping, crafts, gardening, her pets and her water aerobics pals at the Charlestown YMCA. She was a lifelong parishioner of St. Francis De Sales Church and served as a dedicated Executive Secretary to the leadership of the U.S.S. Constitution Museum for many years before her retirement.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Mary's visiting hours on Saturday morning, February 21, 2026 from 9:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. in the Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by her Funeral Mass at 12 P.M. in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown. Her burial at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne will be private.
