Obituary

Jovino “Jobo” R. Nieves was born on February 18, 1942, to Maximina Ramirez and Ramon Nieves in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico. He peacefully passed away on February 3, 2026.
In his younger years, alongside his siblings, Jovino explored the island of Puerto Rico while helping his father and grandfather, Lorenzo Nieves, on their farm—where he developed a deep love for his homeland that stayed with him throughout his life.
Jovino was known for his slender frame, larger-than-life smile, and unforgettable dance moves. There wasn’t a dance floor he didn’t love. If you were sitting nearby, don’t be surprised if he pulled you up to dance with him. The family often jokes that even today; you can walk into a restaurant or bar and almost expect to see him there.
When Jovino moved to the United States, he worked in a restaurant, a hotel, a bakery, and later as a landscaper for over 20 years. He was a hardworking man who always did his best to provide for his family and help others.
Jovino was predeceased by his parents, Maximina Ramirez and Ramon Nieves; his sister, Carmen “Glady” D. Maldonado; his brother, Mario Nieves; and several aunts and uncles.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Esperanza Nieves; his children, Elliot Nieves, Myrta Iveliz Nieves, Silvia Johnson, Yvonne Irma Silver, and Elaine Naomi Nieves Detata; his cherished niece, Lucy Maldonado, who was like a daughter to him and whom he trusted deeply; his brothers, Manuel Nieves and Rafael “Rafi” Nieves; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; cousins; and many nieces and nephews—many of whom would agree Jovino was their favorite uncle.
To know Jovino was to love Jovino. He worked hard, helped whoever he could, and loved his family deeply. From this day forward, we will hold onto all the beautiful moments we were blessed to share with him.
Papi, we love you.
