Shirley (Cousineau) Prachniak, 83, of Worcester died Thursday, January 22nd at home. She leaves her husband of 50 years, Gerald N. Prachniak; Michelle Olivares and her husband, Gilbert and her son, Tyler all of Webster who was like a daughter to Shirley and Gerald.
She was born in Worcester the daughter of Arthur L. and Mary V. (O’Keefe) Cousineau and graduated from St. Peter’s High School. Shirley was a woman of deep faith, quiet devotion, and unwavering love for her family. A lifelong member of Our Lady of the Angels Church, she was a second-generation founder of the parish and remained actively involved throughout her life. Shirley was a daily communicant, a dedicated Eucharistic Minister, and served faithfully in the CCD program. She was affectionately known by many as “the Candy Lady,” a small but memorable way she shared kindness and joy with others.
Shirley worked as a telephone operator for AT&T for ten years before continuing her career at State Mutual, where she worked for more than eight years. She later stepped away from her professional work to care for those she loved most. With remarkable selflessness, she lovingly cared for her parents and her Aunt Irene during their elder years, remaining by their side until their passing.
An avid reader, Shirley found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She cherished time spent in York, Maine, and especially loved Hampton Beach, where she visited every year—most notably on August 15th, a tradition she kept throughout her entire life. She also enjoyed good meals, good times, and the comfort of familiar places.
Above all else, Shirley treasured being with her family. Time spent with her family, friends, and extended family meant everything to her, and her presence brought warmth, laughter, and a sense of togetherness to every gathering.
Shirley will be remembered for her faith-filled life, her generous heart, and the love she so freely gave to all who knew her.
Her funeral is Friday, January 30th from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main Street. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, January 29th from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of the Angels Church.
